Plunging deep into the heart of the former Soviet Block.

Riga, Latvia

A city of contrasts.

Lots of outdoor dining in amongst some interesting architecture.

....and a couple of Riga's most distinctive features:-

Sort of like the Eiffel tower only triangular....and yellow.

The highly unusual suspension bridge with a very modern looking building alongside.

Another angle.

Here's a combination of different things....

....and here's a close-up view of the steeple.

The old and the new.....

This one's so new I don't even know what it is.

return to top

Klaipeda, Lituania

Peaceful & friendly.

Right in the center of town.

....and the people dancing, singing and having a good time.

It's a good thing they put the name of the town on top of one of
the most prominant buildings....otherwise people might forget where they are :-)

On the other hand, what is "iki"?
Look familiar???

And this is the big and the small of it.....

Apparently, this is the local brand of beer (mmmmm).

return to top

Gdynia, Poland

A colorful little town.

Gdynia's main street....

....and a close up of the fountain

A local theatre:-

...and this rather attractive-looking establishment close by.

Whatever they're selling, the frog's kinda cute.

I don't know who this guy is but he didn't seem to mind standing still for the photo.

return to top

Tallinn, Estonia

A country on the move.

Old-town Tallinn, looking out across the rooftops.

A super-modern shopping mall sandwiched between two slices of old-town.

A couple of ordinary-everyday cathedrals (at least for Tallinn).

The local old-town taxis.

Olde Hansa restaurant....where you go to get drunk.
return to top

St. Petersburg, Russia

Oh boy, what architecture!!

St. Isaac's Cathedral.

Hmmmmm.....a building with a lighthouse on top??

The spire of the St. Peter & St. Paul Cathedral.

The Church of the spilled blood.
A couple of typical urban streets.

The Russian version of a totem pole.

They certainly know how to build sandcastles 'round here!

I guess that's Russian for 'The Red Lion'.

....and a very Russian-looking shop.

The Hermitage museum with Alexander column in front (and lots of people).
return to top

Phew!! - I think I definitely saved the best 'till last!!!
