A second look at the Caribbean aboard the GTS Summit

In no particular order.......

George Town, Grand Cayman Island

A town ravaged by hurricanes.

The temptation to open a bank account in the Cayman Islands was almost overwhelming :-)

I was going to offer to take 'my' black coral home with me....but I didn't think that would go down very well.

Looking a bit worse for wear and tear.

I'm sure these palm trees were upright at some point in time.

What used to be one of Grand Cayman's finest resorts
(and will again!!)

The hazards of owning a waterfront restaurant.

The sign says
'staff meeting, friday 4PM'
.....it doesn't say where!!

An Irish bar called "Fidel Murphy's"???......Hmmmmmmm

.....and finally......putting the roof back on to get things up-and-running again.

return to top

Willemstad, Curacao

'Amsterdam of the Caribbean'

Boy, there sure are a lot of bridges in this town:-

The swing-bridge which spans the harbor with the main shopping area in the background.

This is what it looks like crossing the bridge....

....and this is what we find on the other side.

From half-way across we see......another bridge!! (I think this one's for cars)

Say.....I wonder why they call this floating market:-

A quick look 'round the back reveals the reason for that.....

Now this really is a touch of Amsterdam
in the Caribbean. Seems kinda wierd to see
a bridge like that with a palm tree beside it.
OK, so it's not all quite so upmarket....

The bells, the bells!!!

Hang on.....I'm sure there was a bridge there when I.....um.....Walked Across It!!!!

(unless I've been walking on water without realising)

This picture sort-of explains it all.
There's the swing-bridge half-way across
on the left, the big bridge in the background,
and the ferry that carries pedestrians across
when the bridge is open to let ships through.

return to top

Aruba, again

The natural bridge and natural pool.

It's a completely natural pool right on the ocean with waves splashing across the top.....

.....just like that.

The natural bridge.....carved by mother nature.

return to top

Puerto Limon, Costa Rica

On the Central American part of our tour.

The weather here is.....um.....Hot!!!!!!

Hey, you can walk down the main street here instead of driving....what a concept!

A colorful hotel right on the main street.

I think that sign says 'Supermarket'.
(of course, I could be wrong :-)

If it wasn't for the shop-fronts underneath, this balcony would look
like something from a mansion in the countryside somewhere.

I'm not sure what they're selling here, but
the little guy hanging off the side of the building
sure is cute :-)

.....and a silouetted christmas tree against the palms in the background.

return to top

Colon, Panama

The Atlantic gateway to the Panama Canal.

I took these photos while riding 'round town in a horse-drawn buggy (what a tough life).

This is the view of the terminal from the top deck of the ship.....guess they couldn't decide what color to paint it :-)

A town of contrasts.....from the luxurious-looking waterfront park on the left, to the slightly less luxurious dwelling on the right.

This 139-year-old church is
kinda spooky looking.

Colon's version of a christmas 'tree' with an old disused locomotive from the Panama Canal beside it....and ships waiting to go through the Canal in the background.

Here's my ride......

Dont laugh, I actually rode in that thing :-)

The busy main shopping street of Colon, Panama......mmmmmm, keep right on going, driver.

return to top

Ocho Rios, Jamaica

A quick stop in Jamaica, mun.

I think that's the local liquor store.

....and a restaurant for the tourists.

The usual goings-on in the center of town.

return to top

Cozumel, Mexico

A Mexican Experience.

I've never seen so many jewelry stores in my life!!

An oasis in the middle of
a busy tourist mecca.

From the opposite direction
it's a little different.

The Mexican version of multi-color marketing is a little
different from other parts of the Caribbean....
....but equally eye-catching!
On closer inspection....I don't think this is how a shark looks in it's natural habitat!!

Come to think of it.....those birds don't look entirely natural either.

A couple of different versions of the typical Mexican style of transportation.....

A nice contrast of horse-and-buggy with a cruise ship (or ten) in the background.
....and here's the kind of streets they have to negotiate:

(note all the hi-tech stuff in the back ground)

Man, that looks like a tough gig!!!
but you can unwind at Senor Frog's afterwards :-)

A final view of the waterfront shopping area.

return to top

Marigot, St. Maarten

A beautiful little town on the French side of the island.

Now this place is worth the cab-ride to visit.
A little bit of interesting local color.

....and a last look at this stunning tropical paradise.

return to top

Key West, Florida

Right at the end of the Florida Keys.

Key West was pretty much what I expected it to be.......laid-back :-)

Pretty much the whole place looks like this:-

....and this is a good way of getting around.

A couple of the lovely eating establishments of Key West. That's Crabby Dick's on the left and Sloppy Joe's on the right.

Of course, if the train's too colorful for you.....

And one final view of the waterfront at Key West before we finish our tour.

return to top

Soooo, that's the next episode of my Caribbean adventure......next????......looks like it might be Northern Europe and Scandinavia!!!
