A Quick Tour Around the Caribbean

In most cases, I only had the chance to visit the towns close by where we docked....a lot of these places we only visited once. Look for an update next season!!

San Juan, Puerto Rico

The Beginning

This was my view of the ship upon emerging from the hotel at the crack of noon - the taxi driver wasn't too impressed when I changed my mind and decide to walk instead :-)

Fort De France, Martinique

First Stop

Nothing like a bit of dancing in the street to create a good first impression....

From the old architecture to the beautiful walkway along the canal....

....and a cobblestone street in the middle of the colorful shopping district:-

return to top

St. John's, Antigua

Let's Go Shopping!

The shopping close to the pier was very upmarket looking:-

Once you get a bit further away, it loses it's shine a little and becomes a bit more...'real':-

and this old church just cried out to be photographed.

return to top

Philipsburg, St. Maarten

An Island Divided In Two

This beautiful island is half Dutch/half French. We docked on the Dutch side and I didn't get to the French quarter yet....stay tuned :-)

Flea markets anyone?

My kind of beach-front property!!

...and this was my view for about an hour as I waited for it to stop raining. (So much for tropical weather!!)

return to top

Roadtown, Tortola B.V.I.

I'm confused!?

It seems in the British Virgin Islands that they all drive left-hand-drive cars....on the LEFT side of the road! What's that about?

Downtown, Roadtown.

One of the delightful little alley-ways that winds it's way between a bizaar variety of colorful buildings.

....and a scenic walk beside the marina.

Tortola reminded of my home town of Auckland when I saw all the yachting activity going on.

return to top

St. Thomas, U.S.V.I.

Now This is Really Shopping!

Well, here's a unique kind of restaurant:-

One can easily get lost for a few hours amongst all this.

return to top

San Juan, Puerto Rico

and back to the start (for the first time)

The streets of 'Olde San Juan'

Methinks this architect had a color co-ordination problem :-)

and of course, one HAS to go to Starbucks close by the dockside!!

return to top

....and on with the next week's itinerary:-

Roseau, Dominica

Welcome to the West Indies

A nice contrast in architecture....

....not so nice :-)

If you wanted your building to satnd out amonst all this chaos, what would you do?

Of course, there's some nice 'touristy' places as well:-
return to top

Bridgetown, Barbados

Oh! We're going to Barbados

The busy city center of Barbados....

....and close by:-

I guess this is one of the bridges of 'Bridgetown'.

Principle mode of transportation in the Caribbean:-

and a quick trip to the beach to get my feet wet.
return to top

Castries, St. Lucia

Uh oh, all these places are starting to blend into each other....

Fancy a walk around the waterfront?

...or dine in a local 5 star restaurant?

Main street (when the traffic finally cleared)

Yet another take on the Caribbean marketing principle of 'the more color the better'

This old house reminded me of the mansion in 'Psycho' (eeek!!)

The view of the waterfront from the ship.

return to top

Basseterre, St. Kitts

Now this is kinda cute

Wow! Look at the blue skies over the terminal building!!

"The Circus" in the middle of town:-

A closer view:-

There's some cool buildings around this ol' town

While I didn't get any pictures, St. Kitts was one of the few places we sailed out of when it was almost dark. There's something kind of sentimental about watching all the town's lights fade into the distance.

return to top

St. Thomas, U.S.V.I.

Back to St. Thomas - this time from the air (sort of)

Um, do I really want to ride in that thing?

Hmmmm, looks safe enough (suuuure)

Well, the view from the top was worth it - that's the shopping area of St. Thomas near the top of the picture.

...and this what I found at the top:-

Nice paint job....and they're not even selling anything :-)

return to top

San Juan, Puerto Rico

One more time

I'm not sure what this building is....but it sure looks important!!

Waves crashing in the background of one of the great forts that surround Olde San Juan, guarding the entrance to the harbor, and waving us goodbye as we head off on the next leg of our adventure.....

Next Step....The Relocation Cruise from the Caribbean, through the Panama Canal and all the way up to Alaska.
